Children’s rights at the heart of programmes in Guinea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Located in the north of the country, Lab\u00e9 is a major commercial centre for neighbouring countries in the sub-region. The central market remains the most important in the country after the Madina market in the capital Conakry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rural exodus is significant and many families move to the suburbs of cities like Lab\u00e9 in the hope of leading a more decent life, but most of them cannot find work. Children in particular suffer from the country’s difficult socio-economic situation. School enrolment rates are low for both boys and girls and illiteracy remains high among adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The PACOPE programmes implemented in West Africa are based on an empowering approach, avoiding families’ dependence on SOS support to cover the needs of their children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By helping parents\/guardians to develop their own income-generating activities and by offering them advice and moral support throughout the intervention, the programme increases their awareness, decision-making power and financial capacity. Parents\/guardians are empowered to meet their children’s basic needs (e.g. paying for school, health, food, etc.) and to respect their rights to survival, development, protection and participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
